About Science Safety

This online training course has been prepared to help science teachers, administrators, safety coordinators, and other school staff members understand and avoid situations in which accidents might occur in the science laboratories or on field trips and outdoor education experiences. However, no training program can completely describe the procedures for ensuring safety under all conditions and in all situations. Be familiar with and follow all district policies and emergency procedures and ask your supervisor if you have any questions.

This course is designed for use by science and laboratory instructors and, therefore, provides minimal information directed to students or parents about the safety procedures necessary in the science laboratory.

Science Safety Handbook

Since this training course is based on the guidelines set by the California Department of Education (CDE) from the Science Safety Handbook, it is imperative that you have a copy of the Science Safety Handbook available or are very familiar with its contents.

It is recommended that every science teacher have a copy of the Science Safety Handbook in their classroom or laboratory. You may purchase a copy of the handbook by contacting the CDE or you may download a free copy.
