HOUSEKEEPING

Keeping Your Workplace Safe

Housekeeping is a broad term that refers to the routine maintenance and upkeep of a workplace. Good housekeeping is one of the surest ways to identify a safe workplace. You can tell how employers and workers feel about safety just by looking at their housekeeping practices. It’s an essential factor in a good workplace safety program.

Most of us understand that a clean and well-organized workplace is generally a safer working environment. Many accidents and hazards in the workplace can be directly attributed to poor housekeeping. Unfortunately, those workplaces where housekeeping is not a priority tend to be more hazardous to work in and tend to have a higher accident rate. Poor housekeeping can lead to a variety of accidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, and other issues. A cluttered workplace not only increases the risk of injuries from slip, trip, and fall accidents, but an overabundance of material can create more places for potential fires to start and also provides fuel for fires. Attitudes toward safety can be adversely affected by a cluttered workspace, so try to do your part throughout the day, every day. Housekeeping is everybody’s responsibility and it requires everyone to keep the workplace clean, tidy, and organized so that it’s safe to work in.
